ASPNET 20 Provider Model The ASPNET 20 Provider Model provides a uniform way for the membership, role, and pro le services to provide common functionality regardless of the underlying system providing the services This uniform approach enables developers to easily exchange out backend systems that provide the underlying services without having to change the calling APIs This type of functionality enables the membership provider to be switched from the default SQL membership provider to a provider that works with Active Directory or Oracle, without any modi cations to the web application ASPNET comes with a default set of SQL providers that provide support for working with a SQL database to store the membership, role, and pro le information for your web site (see Table 93) These providers are con gured in the machinecon g le, as shown in Listing 93, and are shared across all web applications These providers by default are con gured to work with the LocalSqlServer connection string entry, which points to a SQLExpress database If you want to use a standard SQL database, just override the LocalSqlServer connection string entry in your webcon g le, as shown in Listing 94, to point to a SQL database server of your choice The database that you use must contain a prede ned set of tables and stored procedures, and the aspnet_reqsqlexe application is used to initialize the database with this information The application works either as a command-line application or as a wizard and simply creates the tables and stored procedures used by the services to store and retrieve data
